Vinography Unboxed: Week of October 7, 2012

Thumbnail image for bigstock-Overhead-view-of-a-twelve-bott-31810241.jpgWelcome to this week's installment of my new feature, Vinography Unboxed, where I highlight some of the better wine samples that have crossed my doorstep recently.

This weeks samples included a number of great values from France, South Africa, and Italy. I was particularly impressed with the Laurentaise Corbieres, a very pretty little wine from the Languedoc, which I was unfortunately unable to find for sale online anywhere, but keep your eye out for it as it's a phenomenal value. The Chateau Chambert was a nice surprise, as it avoided the trap of austerity and stiffness into which lot of Cahors wines fall. Much the same could be said for the Lagrein, though Abbazia di Novacella is an outstanding producer that can always be relied upon for great wines.

Closer to home, the Acorn Winery Sangiovese is a nice treat, and an excellent rendition of a grape that very few manage to get right in California. Apparently the Dutton Goldfield Gewürztraminer either isn't yet released, or was made in such small quantities that it's tough to find these days. The Hess "Allomi" Cabernet continues, vintage after vintage, to be one of the better value Cabernets in Napa. Finally, Shafer's Relentless always sits in the shadow of that winery's Cabernets, but it is an excellent wine and for anyone looking for a pedigreed Syrah.

Enjoy!

Pale blonde in the glass, this wine smells of pears and honey. In the mouth, pleasant pear and mineral flavors mix with hints of citrus lingering in the finish. Excellent acidity keeps this wine lively and quite clear of the trap of banality into which much domestic Pinot Gris falls. 13.5% alcohol. Score: around 8.5. Cost: $18. click to buy.

2010 Yorkville Cellars Semillon, Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino, California
Pale greenish gold in the glass, this wine smells of yeasty lemon zest. In the mouth flavors of lemon zest and freshly baked bread crust mix with bright acidity. Pink grapefruit surfaces in the finish. 13% alcohol. Score: around 8.5. Cost: $20. click to buy.

2009 Shafer Vineyards "Relentless" Syrah, Napa Valley, California
