Remembering Haridimos Hatzidakis

It is with great sadness that I learned last week of the passing of winemaker Haridimos Hatzidakis, one of Greece’s finest winemakers. At the age of fifty, we lost him far too soon, and I can’t imagine his family’s heartbreak at the tragedy. I didn’t know Hatzidakis well, having only visited his winery once for a tasting, but as with all of the world’s most profound wines, I felt a bit of something of him in his wines, which were the finest on Santorini and some of the most distinctive wines in the world.

In my regret and sadness for his passing, I returned to the images I made of my visit to his original winery (a new one was just completed), and in tribute to the man we have lost, I offer them to you. They are something of a glimpse into his complexities, and a reminder, just as his wines were, that there is beauty to be found almost everywhere.

Goodbye Haridimos Hatzidakis. Rest in beauty and peace.
