If Chardonnays lifted weights, this one would be able to bench press way over its body weight. It's a massive, full frontal assault of oak and butter that, while not my style, is an extremely competent wine and one that will satisfy a certain set of extremely demanding California Chardonnay drinkers who enjoy powerful wines that will even age for a time. Warning: this wine is not for everyone -- if you're looking for a refreshing, food-friendly Chardonnay that will please wine afficionados and novices alike, this aint it.
Tasting Notes:
The wine shines as a viscous golden yellow in the glass, with lovely arches. Aromas of pinapple, mango, and of freshly milled sawdust collect in the glass, and spill over into initial flavors of mixed tropical fruit. Then, think about big oak pancakes slathered in butter. For my personal taste in Chards, there's too much evidence of heavy secondary malolactic fermentation, but not to the point that it ruins the experience. Though it's a strong wine (15% alcohol) the flavors are extremely well balanced, and the finish is long with hints of fresh flowers.
Food Pairing:
This wine is hearty enough to stand up to spicy herb rubbed roast chicken or a wild salmon in a teriyaki glaze.
Overall Score: 8/8.5
How Much?: $36
This wine is available at various online retailers and at select small wine shops. I got this bottle from Porthos.
