ERI Pre-Auction Tasting: February 24th, San Francisco

So, you interested in taking my advice to learn more about wines you might not normally be able to afford? If you live in or near San Francisco, your next chance to do so is coming up this Saturday.

Edward Roberts International, a Chicago based wine auction house, occasionally (every couple of years, if you consider that occasionally) holds a wine auction in San Francisco which is generally preceded by a pre-auction tasting where some of the wines that will be sold later in the day are opened for tasting by prospective bidders as well as any members of the public that are willing to pay $50 for the privilege.

But of course it would be nice to know what your $50 would get you the chance to taste, right? Well, don't say that Vinography never delivers. Here are the bottles that will be opened for the tasting:

2000 Fisher Chardonnay O'Conner Vineyard
1966 Pierre Gelin Fixin Clos de Chapitre Domaine Marion
1966 Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee
1967 DRC Echezeaux
1990 Domaine Chantal Lescare Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots
1965 Inglenook Pinot Noir
2002 Kistler Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard
2003 William Selyem Pinot Noir Westside Road neighbors
1949 Chateau Gruaud- Larose
1964 Chateau Latour
1966 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou
1967 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild
1994 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild
1995 Chateau Calon-Segur
1999 Banfi Brunello di Montalcino
1987 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon
1995 Plumpjack Cabernet Sauvignon
1997 Heitz Cabernet Sauvignon Bella Oaks
1997 Heitz Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard
1998 Hanna Cabernet Sauvignon Bismarck Ranch
1999 Bacio Divino
2000 Selene Merlot
2002 Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon
2002 Piedra Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain
2002 Behrens and Hitchcock Les Chiens du Monde
2003 Pax Cuvee Mariah
2004 Pax Syrah Walker Vine Hill
1962 Jaboulet Cornas
2002 Parsons Flat Shiraz//Cabernet RTW
1983 Schloss Schonborn Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling Kabinett
1976 Schloss Eltz Eltviller Sonnenberg Riesling Spatlese
1976 Schloss Schonborn Hockheimer Domdechaney Riesling Auslese
1985 Erben Hockheimer Holle Riesling Auslese
1996 Trimbach Gewurztraminer Cuvee des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre Vendange Tardive
1994 Graham Vintage Porto

I'd pay $50 just to get a mouthful of that 1967 Domaine Romanee Conti. I hope it's a good bottle, even though I won't be able to attend this tasting. But I hope some of you go.

There will be a free continental breakfast during the auction, which follows the tasting. If you've never seen a live wine auction before, you might be interested to watch a couple of lots get bid up, but any more than that and you'll be drowsing off in your chair. At least then you don't ever need to see another one unless you're planning on bidding yourself, at which point they become much more exciting.

Alder, thanks for the heads-up. The tasting was a lot of fun and not very crowded at all (maybe 25 people), so we all got to taste whatever we wanted. I posted some notes on my blog - www.nomadicwines.com.

You actually make it appear so easy along with your presentation but I find this topic to be
actually something which I think I would never understand.
It sort of feels too complicated and extremely huge for me.
I am looking ahead in your subsequent publish, I'll try to get the cling of it!
