I’ll Drink to That: David Gordon of Tribeca Grill

Episode 306 of I’ll Drink to That! has been released and it features David Gordon, the longtime Wine Director of Tribeca Grill in Manhattan.

David Gordon has been working at Tribeca Grill for nearly 25 years, and in many ways he is the link between the sommeliers of a younger generation (Patrick Cappiello of Pearl & Ash is just one of many successful sommeliers who once worked for David) and those sommeliers who basically founded the idea of the American sommelier in the first place. David remembers being the young guy who didn’t know a whole lot about wine, working events with the big names of the day that he admired. Now he is one of those elders. Just that perspective alone makes this interview remarkable, but it is also sort of this incredible look into the real inner life of the industry over the last three decades. This is a candid interview, David doesn’t hold back in sharing his own real feelings about a number of subjects, and as much as this is a tour through some of the notable moments in the New York wine scene, this is also a tour the evolving perspective of the narrator, someone whose own feelings towards wine and restaurants evolved over time. Probably we have all gone through evolutions in our personal experience of wine. This is one of those interviews that isn’t afraid to address those feelings head on.
