Episode 302 of I’ll Drink to That! has been released and it features Richard Betts of An Approach to Relaxation wine label, among other ventures.

Richard Betts is a busy man. He has just released a new book, a scratch & sniff guide to whiskey, which follows on a scratch & sniff wine book that has sold hundreds of thousands of copies inside a couple of years. He is designing a large mezcal distillery in Oaxaca. He has a new winemaking project in Australia. And he continues to be involved with other wine projects, including a very successful rosé from Provence. In a real geographical sense, Betts is all over the place. But he found some time to return to I’ll Drink to That!, on which he appeared some time ago for a candid interview that ran so long it was divided into two separate episodes. This time Betts opens up once again, admitting his weaknesses as a manager, for instance, and sharing what he sees as fundamental to any good business deal in the wine (or spirits) business. Along the way he pries open a door onto the particular challenges and rewards affecting each aspect of his businesses, from the publishing world, to the construction of a distillery, looking at the terroir nuances in Australia, and examining the benefits of different rosé production styles. If you want to understand what is happening in the beverage world and where value is left to be unlocked, this is a good interview to listen in on.
