Jancis Robinson has been one of the world’s foremost commentators on wine for a little more than 40 years now. The first person to earn a Masters of Wine certification outside the wine trade, she is also the author of some of the wine world’s most revered and helpful reference books.
She also happens to be my boss (thanks to the monthly column I write for her web site) and a good friend.
So when UC Davis rang up and asked if I would be willing to interview her on stage, on the occasion of Jancis donating 13 boxes of her personal papers and notes to the university’s library, I was happy to say yes.
Figuring out what questions to ask Jancis in front of 200 people was slightly tricky. I tried to strike a balance between questions whose answers would cover some of Jancis’ experiences and career (for those who knew less of her accomplishments) and more interesting questions about the papers she was donating and her thoughts on the world of wine.
Of course, it’s pretty hard to cover all the bases in only 45 or 50 minutes, so you’ll have to judge for yourself how well I did.
UC Davis Library has just made the video of our session public. I hope you enjoy the event it as much as I did.
