LOMPOC, CA: Fog licks at the top of the Sta. Rita Hills above Sanford & Benedict Vineyard as new spring growth pushes above the trellis wires. The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, planted in 1971, was the first vineyard in what would become known as the Sta. Rita Hills. Michael Benedict and Richard Sanford originally planted it with Chardonnay and Riesling, but in 1972 added Pinot Noir, beginning the history of one of California’s great cool-climate growing regions.
