Horses graze in the foreground, while at the crest of the hills, a vineyard grazes the sky in the spring green of Ballard Canyon in Santa Barbara County. Pioneered as a winegrowing region in 1974, Ballard Canyon became an American Viticultural Area in 2013. Its relatively 7,800 acres hold only about 550 acres of vineyards, dominated by Syrah, Grenache and other Rhône varieties both red and white.
