If you’re gonna make world-class Riesling, you’re gonna want bigger barrels. That’s one of the takeaways you’ll get from making visits to wine producers in Germany. This particularly nice-looking cellar of large-format casks is from Weingut Wittmann in the Rheinhessen. Larger format oak provides the slow oxygenation, lees contact, and lack of overt wood influence that helps Riesling age into its potential for crystalline greatness.
