Vinography Images: Steel Forest

A new vineyard rises at the base of a forest of rebar in the Contrada San Lorenzo, on the northern side of Mount Etna in Sicily. You can see the powdery, ash- and pumice-based soils that make the region’s wines so distinct. Contrada are historically designated and named areas within the Mount Etna region. They are not official GI designations like the climats of Burgundy, but they are nonetheless used to name the vineyard sites for the winemakers of Etna.
