A line of clouds obscures the craggy escarpment of the Combe de Savoie in the Savoie region of France, near the village of Saint-Pierre-d’Albigny. In the middle stripe of darker trees on the hillside, you can see the fortifications of Château de Miolans, a fortress prison known for having housed the Marquis de Sade. The limestone escarpments here are the foothills to the French Alps, and produce some remarkable, stony wines that are a delight to drink.
