Many have considered Pinot Noir to be New Zealand’s next big thing. But I’m here to say that Chardonnay, so far, has it beat. I tasted 60 or so of the country’s finest bottlings and there are some spectacular examples. This was a very impressive wine. On the lighter shade of Cerasuolo, and all flinty, salty, citrus, and berry. Definitely modern in its reductive styling but flipping delicious. I tried this bottle on release and it was excellent. Now? It’s f*cking phenomenal. This is not your average CA rosé. It’s reduced, saline, umami, herbal, floral, berry and citrus deliciousness with a verve that makes you want to dance around like a muppet. Lost in the Cellar, Episode 197. Will a 12-year-old ramato-style Pinot Gris still have anything to offer after being discovered languishing in the cellar? Damn right it will. Still has fruit, acidity, great aromas, mellow tannic grip. Amazing @paxmahle !
