A lovely lunch wine with @pmabray and @joefattorini at @zuzunapa yesterday. Complex and rich with saline notes of lemon, melon, apple, and a hint of butterscotch. Well integrated wood and excellent acidity. Mostly Viura but with a dollop of a bunch of other old vine whites. 2019

People do not age California Pinot Noir enough. Th

People do not age California Pinot Noir enough. This is as true of lesser bottlings as it is the expensive single vineyard wines. A lot of people believe that the only California Pinot Noirs to age are the $70 bottles with fancy single vineyard names on them. But a humble Sonoma Coast bottling from a good producer (like @williamsselyemwinery) will almost always blossom for 6-12 years, provided it is balanced and has good acidity. Here’s a 13+ year-old bottle that is just singing with raspberry jam, red miso, dried herbs, forest floor and a hint of leather. Wonderfully delicious. 2008 Williams-Selyem Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, CA.

This has basically become my favorite Bourgogne Rouge. I can’t afford to buy the Burgundy that I really want to and love to drink, so I gotta get my fix in other ways and this wine never disappoints. It’s also aging quite well. I bought a tranche of the 15’s a number of years ago and they’re just gorgeous. Incredible pure expression of forest berries that have an almost alpine quality with lovely florals and aromatic herbs all enlivened by nervy acidity and a gorgeous silky texture. I love pretty much all the wines from Hudelot-Noellat (@charlesvc). 2015 Hudelot-Noellat Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy, France.
