Golden Glass Wine Tasting: June 12, San Francisco

Once upon a time, the Golden Glass tasting was about as close as you could get to a secret “wine insiders” tasting. Historically under-promoted, and generally not well attended, this tasting began as a smaller Italian focused “slow wine” tasting put on by Slow Food USA.

Now in its 7th year, The Golden Glass continues to be co-produced by Slow Food (who recently pulled out of their relationship with the Gambero Rosso tasting), and now focuses other regions in addition to Italy, with a decidedly sustainable, regional bent. Over 100 different wine producers are supposed to attend and pour their wines this year. You can see the full list of participating wineries on the event web site.

As one might expect, the food at this event is local, and quite good. From Perbacco to A16 to Heaven’s Dog, this event will showcase some of the best artisan food purveyors in the Bay Area. I usually recommend to readers that they show up to public tastings with a full stomach, but this is one event where you might make sure to leave a little room for snacks.

In addition to the grand tasting, the event also includes winemaker dinners at restaurants around the Bay Area. Those who may be overwhelmed by a large public tasting may find these more intimate events.

So if you love good food and good wine, and don’t have a lot going on the Second Saturday in June, this may be just your ticket. Proceeds benefit Slow Food USA, and specifically their programs for schools.

2010 Golden Glass Tasting
Saturday June 12th, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
The Festival Pavilion, Fort Mason
San Francisco, CA 94123

Tickets are $60 for members of the public (discounted for members of Slow Food and other associated organizations) and should be purchased in advance online. Any tickets left will be sold at the door for $70.

My usual tips for public tastings: get a good night’s sleep; drink lots of water; dress in dark clothing; eat along the way; and if you want to enjoy yourself AND learn something….SPIT!
