It’s tough getting attention as a wine region in Northern California if you aren’t Napa or Sonoma. These two regions carry such weighty reputations, and speak with such loud voices, it can be hard to be heard if you’re one of the other, lesser-known regions.
Mendocino County, in particular, suffers from a lack of recognition despite being home to some of California’s best Pinot Noir. Despite being home to the Anderson Valley and its world-class Pinot and aromatic white grape varieties, the county is better known by the average person for redwood trees rather than wine.
All of which is why, if you count yourself as a curious wine lover, you might consider attending the Taste of Mendocino wine event on April 7th in San Francisco.
Compared to some of the other blockbuster wine tastings that take place in San Francisco, this one can come off as quaint — modestly sized, subdued, and friendly as it is. But that’s about right for the quiet county of Mendocino. Last time I attended I discovered a couple of excellent new producers that had sprung up without much fanfare in recent years.
The event also makes an effort to have interesting food purveyors on offer, from chocolate to pies to wood-fired pizza.
If you’re not quite ready to make the three hour drive up to the Anderson Valley, just let Mendocino come to you!
