POMEROL, FRANCE: Drops of morning dew glisten on ripening Merlot in Pomerol, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Known for Merlot, rather than Cabernet Sauvignon (the dominant grape on Bordeaux’s Left Bank), Pomerol also does not have a village of the same name within it, unlike the other appellations of Bordeaux. It is one of the smallest wine regions of Bordeaux, and has never been classified in the structure of “Great Growths” that have been applied to its neighboring appellations.
