A winter storm darkens the sky behind the rows of vineyards that line the road through Happy Canyon in Santa Barbara’s wine country. Happy Canyon AVA, tucked into the corner of the Santa Ynez Valley, is one of California’s smallest growing areas, but also one of its most versatile. The cool westen reaches of the canyon grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, while the warmer eastern side ripens Cabernet and Merlot.
