The smooth amphitheater-like curve of this pretty little vineyard isn’t just a lucky bit of erosion. What you’re looking at is in fact the inside of a volcanic crater in the Campi Flegrei, or the Phlegrean Fields region just north of Naples, Italy. One of the world’s most active (and dangerous) volcanic fields, the region has nonetheless been home to vineyards for centuries. This particular vineyard in the Lago di Averno crater is owned by Le Cantine dell’Averno and is planted to Falanghina and Piedirosso grapes.
