Spring growth underneath vines on Mount Etna in Sicily catches the sunlight and echoes the fire that created the landscape itself. The red plants are likely sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella), which grows in the spring in the acidic, powdery basalt and ash soils of Etna. This planting is relatively young, and departs from the traditional albarello (bush vine) training that characterizes the oldest and most impressive vineyards on Etna.
