Vinography Images: Whale Stones

Morning mist hangs on the edges of a young vineyard carved into the extremely rocky hillside above the Alto de la Ballena winery in the Maldonado region of Uruguay. Alto de la Ballena means “heights of the whale” and was so named as it sits on the granite- and schist-riddled flanks of the Sierra de la Ballena. I believe the vineyard posts are made tall enough to hold bird netting well above the fruit zone as harvest nears.
