Prosecco’s bubbly brightness belies a reality about which your average brunch-goer remains blissfully ignorant: the best stuff comes from some of the steepest and most dangerous-to-farm vineyards in the world. Driving around the DOCG area of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore proves to be a jaw-dropping experience, as around every corner, vertiginous vineyards sweep into view. Many of the steepest hillsides have historical names—not quite like Burgundy’s climats, but similar in their historical persistence. These hillsides are known as rive, and this particular image captures the Rive di Combai, descending from the village of the same name at the crest of the hill. Behind in the distance, you can see the beginnings of the Dolomites
